The Cold Water Problem

The hardest step is the first one

Why Is Starting Something New So Damn Hard?

Ever notice how starting something new feels like standing at the edge of an ice-cold ocean? You know once you get in, you’ll adjust. But that first step? Miserable.

I can’t count how many times I’ve talked about a big idea, a new habit, a “this year I’m gonna…” plan — and then weeks go by and nothing’s changed. Sound familiar? It’s human nature. But let’s call it what it is: excuses.

Why We Don’t Start

The reasons we don’t start are sneaky. Fear’s the big one. Fear of failing. Fear of looking dumb. Sometimes it’s even fear of succeeding and what comes next.

Then there’s overwhelm — you look at the whole mountain and forget it’s climbed one step at a time.

Comfort zones don’t help either. We get stuck in routines. We tell ourselves we’re “too busy.” And then perfectionism shows up, whispering, “If you can’t do it perfectly, don’t bother at all.”

The Power of Accountability

Here’s what makes the difference: having someone in your corner. A friend, a coach, a mentor — someone who’s not impressed with your excuses and won’t let you off the hook. When they remind you of what you said you wanted, it’s the nudge (or shove) you need.

Starting will never be easy. But it’s a lot harder to hide when someone’s keeping you honest.

That’s the difference between dreaming and doing.

Your Turn: What’s Holding You Back?

Let me ask you:

  • What’s something you’ve been dreaming about starting?

  • What’s stopping you?

  • Is it fear? Time? Overwhelm?

  • Or maybe… you just need someone in your corner.

What’s your next move?
